Andy Serkis takes on George Orwell’s classic tale with the latest animated version of ‘Animal Farm’, featuring stellar voice performances from Gaten Matarazzo, Woody Harrelson, and Laverne Cox. Despite the star-studded cast bringing life to the characters, the film dials down the story’s original political sharpness, resulting in a dumbed-down adaptation that may disappoint Orwell fans.
The animation captures the farm’s rustic environment vividly, yet the narrative lacks the depth and biting social commentary that made the source material a timeless allegory. Serkis attempts to make the story accessible for younger audiences, but in doing so, the impactful themes of power, corruption, and revolution are softened considerably.
While the voice work by Matarazzo, Harrelson, and Cox adds charm and energy, the script and direction do not fully harness the potential of Orwell’s message. Overall, ‘Animal Farm’ offers a visually appealing yet narratively muted experience that might resonate more with casual viewers than passionate Orwell enthusiasts.
