The Indian rom-com series “Mismatched” premiered on Netflix on November 20th, 2020. It is inspired by Sandhya Menon’s book, When Dimple Met Rishi. The story is set in Jaipur, focusing on the life of a young Dimple and Rishi, who meet over the summer at a tech class.
Dimple happens to be an aspiring coder working on an app, whereas Rishi is an old-fashioned love-struck boy who dreams of arranged marriages. The different dynamics of their characters lead to an unanticipated bond as they navigate through the journey of friendship, love, and self-discovery.
The show stars Prajakta Koli as Dimple and Rohit Saraf as Rishi and received applause for the chemistry between the stars. Koli made Dimple vulnerable and Saraf made Rishi charming. Other important characters include Celina (Muskkaan Jaferi) and Namrata (Devyani Shorey), who developed each of their compelling backstories as well.
“Mismatched” wanted to address homosexual relationships, ableism, body image, and toxic masculinity. Would we say that some are doing a fair amount of soul searching regarding aspects of teenage life today? While it is admirable that the show introduced all of these themes, it left critics feeling like the raw story only lightly skimmed the surface of these social issues.
The season 1 series was a light-hearted exploration of young romance and the relatable experience of college life. It described the storytelling as reasonably predictable, as many plot points, especially the very unexpected gaming showdown in the finale, just seemed out of place.
“Mismatched” gives one a fresh perspective on youth in India and modern relationships. The music on the show, like Prateek Kuhad’s, was perfect for the storyline and made watching enjoyable.
Overall, “Mismatched” Season 1 was an endearing series about ambitious young love and dreams. While not hard-hitting, the relatable characters and experiences felt familiar to today’s youth, making it a romantic comedy worth viewing if you are a fan of the genre.
