The new horror film ‘The Ritual’, directed by David Midell, attempts to breathe life into the overdone exorcism subgenre but unfortunately falls flat. Featuring veteran actor Al Pacino alongside rising star Dan Stevens, the movie fails to deliver originality or suspense, instead offering a regurgitation of familiar tropes.
Set against a typical haunted backdrop, ‘The Ritual’ brings together a cast that includes Ashley Greene, Patricia Heaton, and Abigail Cowen. Despite their talents, the performances are hindered by a predictable storyline and clichéd scares that have become all too common in exorcism-themed films.
Al Pacino takes on a role that feels underwritten and lacks the gravitas audiences have come to expect from his remarkable career. Dan Stevens, known for his versatility, also struggles to make a significant impact due to a lackluster script. The supporting cast brings moments of interest, but they are not enough to elevate the film beyond mediocrity.
Visually, the movie adheres to standard horror conventions with dark, moody cinematography aiming to create an eerie atmosphere. However, the direction by Midell does little to innovate or surprise, making the film feel more like a checklist of genre clichés than a fresh take on exorcism stories.
In a market saturated with supernatural thrillers, ‘The Ritual’ does little to differentiate itself. Fans of the genre may find some familiar elements to appreciate, but those seeking something new or engaging will likely be disappointed. The film serves as a reminder that star power alone cannot carry a film without a compelling script and visionary direction.
